After being diagnosed with incurable secondary breast cancer in August this year Rosemary was referred to the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care as an out patient under the care of the community nursing team. In early September Rosemary was admitted to the hospice so that they could better assess and manage her pain. Unfortunately shortly after being admitted she became dangerously ill due to high calcium levels in her blood and was referred to the Royal Surrey County Hospital. After six weeks at the Royal Surrey she was discharged home and back into the care of the Phyllis Tuckwell community care team who provided physiotherapy, counselling, and most importantly some pampering to Rosemary at home. On the 23rd November Rosemary was readmitted to the Royal Surrey whereupon the bleak diagnosis was that she was unlikely to survive to Christmas. The kindness, caring nature and calmness of the hospice staff meant it was our wish that she spend her last days at the hospice. Unfortunately Rosemary had to wait two weeks for a bed to become available at the hospice and alas Rosemary’s condition deteriorated so much that on the day of her transfer she was too ill to be transferred and she peacefully pasted away later that day. During the all too brief period available to us after the devastating diagnosis Rosemary and I discussed her funeral, it was Rosemary’s firm wish that no flowers be sent but that any donations be made to help Phyllis Tuckwell continue the outstanding work that they do. The important care that Phyllis Tuckwell offer to patients and their families living with a terminal illness, at a critical time in their lives, is only possible through the generous support of the community. They have to raise over £20,000 each and every day, as only 20% of their costs are covered by the NHS/Government. I cannot emphasis enough the dedication and loving support shown by all the Phyllis Tuckwell staff and the comfort and reassurance that it brought to Rosemary.
